Several years ago I came across the website complexification.net. Where various algorithms with random elements are used to create complex images.
The image above is a simple attempt at recreating this particular model; and it contains 5135 boxes between 2x2 and 100x100. My code starts with small boxes and increase them until they hit something or they reach the maximum allowed size.
if you are interested the following matlab/octave files were used:

• main.m main script
• drawSqr.m draws a square
• findTuple.m Finds a free point in the grid
• randSqr.m finds the biggest possible square
